| Mountain expeditions
Rodrigo
Jordan together with five other Chilean adventurers will take on
the Mountain range Sentry on a trek across the Ellsworth Massif. Rodrigo Jordan previously summited both Mount Everest and K2 during the nineties and will now add polar exploring to his list of accomplishments. The team consists of Eugenio Guzman, Ernesto Olivares, Pablo Gutierrez, Marcelo Grifferos and Tomas Grifferos. The expedition will last for 60 days.
The Omega
Foundation will again be sending a team to measure the height of Mt
Shinn, generally considered the third-highest mountain in Antarctica.
The team consists of Damien Gildea and Rodrigo Fica. The Omega Shinn GPS Expedition 2002 will take a Trimble 5700 GPS
receiver to the summit, via the normal southwest face route, and record
data for six hours. This year the Omega Shinn expedition was a success as Damien Gildea and Rodrigo Fica reached the summit of Mount Shinn just after midnight on December 1st. The climb took seven hours from Camp 3 and they stayed for another seven hours at the top running the GPS. The data processing went well and the new height for Mount Shinn is 4660,502m.
Mount Vinson expedition The South Corean climber Park Young Seok is heading out on an expedition with the intention of climbing Mount Vinson in Antarctica. He will be joined by fellow climber Kim Hyoung Woo. Park has already climbed all 14 of the world's 8000 meter peaks during the past ten years. If this expedition is sucessful Park will have completed the seven summits. The team will be dropped off at Mount Vinson basecamp in the middle of November. On November 24th 2002 Park Young Seok and Kim Hyoung Woo summited Mount Vinson at 1730 hrs local time. This puts Park amongst the few who have successfully scaled the seven summits. After the summit they went back to Patriot Hills to celebrate.
North Pole expeditions
The Polar Race In early April 2003 the Polar Race will begin. The idea being to prove that you can not only survive but win in the most desolate place on Earth. The competitors will start from Resolute< Bay, the race continues along the west coast of the island before crossing to the Polaris mine on Little Cornwallis Island. After that comes King Christian Island situated in the MacLean Strait. They will then be in the area around the North Magnetic Pole and the teams will finish at Isachsen. The organizers are British adventurers Jock Wishart and David Hempleman-Adams who have set world records, reached the Poles and challenged the oceans. The race is open to both experienced polar adventurers and novices to polar conditions and is expected to last around 30 days.
