Skiing Manhattan

T&T had physical training at a NYC gym. Heavy weight lifting, cross-country skiing cardio machines and pulling used tires stolen from the New Jersey highway.

"The gym at Chelsea Piers is awesome. It sits on piers right on the Hudson river. They have this indoor beach volley sand pit and thatīs where weīve spent most of our time lately. We just pull and pull, one lap after the other.

People think that this is a new sort of urban workout. Once someone even used the tires for their own routine. Jose (the team trainer) was very upset. He had brought the truck tire on the subway all the way from Queens. People could
bring their own tires, he said.

But then the gym made a story on us in the member paper. We said something about wanting to go to outer space. Now everyone comes up to us asking when we are leaving.  Lately, Jose came dragging with a wheel-barrow loaded with sand. Just to make it more fun. So now we pull that around too."

The teams task to ski 1250 miles (2000km) and pull sledges excessive of 220lb (100kg) is taken seriously by Jose, a former Army guy: "Itīs important to prepare the body for the routine at Antarctica and also to vary the workout, to keep it fun."

One such fun thing was a swim in Hudson river:

- "But that was their idea. I hate sharks."
