Death Valley update: Todd Carmichael using “the latest in high tech comms”: HumanEdgeTech

08:35 am CDT Oct 01, 2009
Todd dispatched over Contact that during this desert expedition he will be using “the latest in high tech comms equipment” developed by HumanEdgeTech. “There is not a person on earth who knows expedition communications better than Tom [Sjogren at HET], and this time he out did himself.”

Todd demonstrates the video and voice features on his website.

HumanEdgeTech

Todd reported, “This expedition I’ll be carrying the latest in high tech comms equipment, thanks to my friend Tom at Human Edge Tech.”

“There is not a person on earth who knows expedition communications better than Tom, and this time he out did himself.”

“From flexible solar panels, to a portable satellite link to the rugged mini laptop, Tom built an unbelievable system.”

“Add cameras and a SPOT tracker and not only can I be tracked every step of the way but I can send pod casts, videos and images to share. You can even send me an e-mail.”

Check Todd’s website (in the links section) under “Full comms check” for his video dispatch.

Equipment shipped

Todd has sent his cart, The Pig, and 5 boxes of supplies to Las Vegas where he will be arriving on 7 September.

“The plan is to pick the “pig n’ things” up in Vegas, purchase a few liters of white gas, then drive to Baker California (pop. 914), 30 miles south of Death Valley, home to the world's largest thermometer. From there, it’s go time.”

Three dangers

Todd explained about three dangers he could encounter in Death Valley:

Rain: “Rains in the surrounding mountains spell spectacular flash flooding in the valley; particularly in washes and gorges. The parched earth can’t absorb water, so when clouds gather, find me rushing to high ground.”

Heat Exhaustion: “In Death Valley this can be deadly. In order to keep tabs on myself, I’ll be wearing a heart rate monitor with the alarm set at 165 bpm.

Wildlife: ”A few species of snake and scorpion. I’ll be keeping my hands to myself.”

American Todd Carmichael will be attempting a 400 mile trek in 18.5 days through Death Valley in the USA; and circumstances permitting he will trek another 30 km. He will be hauling his reportedly 450 pounds of water (33 gallons / 125 liters), food and gear.

Todd Carmichael skied solo to the South Pole in the 2008-09 season in a speed record time of 39 days, 7 hours and 49 minutes.

Death Valley is a desert located in the southwestern United States of America and located on the border between California and Nevada. Some areas are located below sea level which makes it one of the hottest places on earth.
