Apr 26. 8 Mile(s)
Ben Saunders is only a day’s march or about 8 nautical miles away from the safety of Borneo. Starting to talk with you sled together with tunes from the Top Gun soundtrack going on repeat in your head are good signs it's high time to get back to civilization.

Apr 26. Deathly quiet and ghostly
Pen Hadows lonesome struggle in the Arctic continues. Numerous high pressure ridges and fog rolling in over the British explorer makes the landscape look weird. Pen describes it as "very ghostly, deathly quiet and spooky". The number of leads has decreased the last day but the fog has to come from somewhere.

Apr 26. Whiteout on North West Passage
The Norwegian team travelling through the classic North West Passage have finished the first stage of their journey. They are now en route towards the village Gjoa Haven. The last few days have been spent in white out which is challenging both physically and mentally. They still have about 90 km before reaching the village.

Due to the cold weather in March the two started the trek in a slow tempo to avoid injuries which has worked fine since they are both doing fine now. The temperature has now gone up and they have begun to pick up the pace and walk for 1 to 12 hours daily. So far the ice have been ok but they have spotted some cracks in it.

Apr 24. Jumping over the frozen leads
Heading back towards Borneo from the North Pole Ben Saunders decided to take a half-day off to rest, obviously strained after nine days of hard skiing. The ice looks to Ben like a bomb might have gone off during the night but thankfully the many leads have been frozen over enough for Ben to creep over. You have to be very careful where you put your feet when on the Arctic Ice, or mind the gap as Ben says alluding to the voice heard in the London Underground.

Apr 23. Difficult ice and a well deserved rest for Pen
The ice conditions have been difficult over the weekend for Pen Hadow on his way towards the North Pole. On Monday the ice relented a bit with long open pans ahead but was later followed by light rubble fields which slowed him down. N89.53.9 E77.42.5 10.2 nautical miles -28°c.

Spotted some more ski tracks this afternoon - very strange to see signs of other people around. Another big mileage day - in a way I'm frustrated that I'm not going 'all the way' this year - I'm now in no doubt that my fitness & preparation were up to it...
