Pen Hadow solo expedition

April 11, 2003 - This Wednesday Pen Hadow had spent 24 days on the Arctic ice and had managed to get 93,5 nautical miles closer to the Pole. The week began with trouble sleeping as the ice was groaning and moving all night. One thing about walking on ice is that it changes constantly, upon waking that morning Pen's surroundings had changed completely during the night. There were hairline cracks all over the ice pan that the tent was on and about 40 meters away a new pressure ridge had appeared.

Another lead to swim

The temperature is at -32°C and the skies have been clear. Pen has also had some good walking over the last few days but on Wednesday he was forced to swim another lead, this one about 75 meters wide. After walking for another hour and a half he encountered yet another lead, this one over 400 meters wide. He decided to stay put and set up camp hoping that the lead will freeze up over night.
