Pen Hadow solo expedition

April 23, 2003 - Pen Hadow struggles on towards the North Pole and his latest position puts him at 86 00’ N 72 45’W. He has managed 175 nautical miles so far with 241 remaining before reaching the Pole. Yesterday was a well deserved rest day to catch up and repair the equipment. The temperature is at 24 degrees below zero and the weight of the sleigh has gone down to 99 kg and it keeps getting lighter with every passing day.

The fuel is running low

The ice conditions have been difficult over the weekend and it takes a lot of effort to keep his spirits high. On Monday the ice relented a bit with long open pans ahead but was later followed by light rubble fields which slowed him down. The last few days Pen has been skiing about 10-12 hours a day. Pen is running low on fuel so he has begun to seriously ration what is left. With about 30 days left before the Pole consumption must be kept at a minimal.
