Ben Saunders update

April 25, 2003 - With spring approaching the Arctic gets warmer with every passing day and when all that is between you and the depths of the Arctic Ocean is ice then it is easy to feel paranoid. The feeling now is that the ice is disintegrating around him as he skis. He had quite a scare today when the snow bank of a lead collapsed under him as he was crossing it. Ben very nearly had to take a swim then but made it safely across. So now Ben wishes the temperature would drop another ten degrees.

Ben keeps drifting to the east

He is heading for Borneo and covered 10 nautical miles today despite difficult ice conditions. This means that he will probably get there by tomorrow. He is drifting to the east and is skiing southwest to counteract it. But after a day of skiing he still found himself one degree further to the east. Ben's current position is N89.18.3 E106.21.2 10.2nm. This is the first time that Ben has been completely alone for 11 days so he is looking forward to coming home.
