A little food shopping before Livingston
07:52 a.m. EST Nov 19, 2003
Damo and the Omega Livingston Island expedition have just done their food shopping and plan to fly out onto the ice Saturday, weather permitting of course. They will also do a few more interviews as well. The word is that over 100 people are lined up for Mount Vinson this year; apparently the logistics and flight shake up with ANI and ALE this year must not of had that big of an impact.

"..Had dinner in the *Plastic Chair Restaurant last night. Pretty much same as ever. The weather has been really nice so far this year, plenty of sun, little wind and almost no rain. The Peninsula has had good weather too, so we are expecting things to change ... :-)"

On the expedition this year will be Damien Gildea, 34, of Australia, Chilean Rodrigo Fica, 36, an Australian GIS specialist John Bath, 33, and a Chilean student, Osvaldo Usaj. The aim this year is to first ascend Mount Friesland on Livingston Island and record it’s proper height by means of a GPS. The information collected by the Omega expedition will be combined with previous maps and research to make a more accurate map of the area that will be available sometime in 2004.

*Plastic Chair restaurant – Sometimes teams will wait weeks before the weather clears enough for a flight down to the ice from Puntas. After packing and re-packing, Antarctic teams often spend time at this restaurant. No one really knows the name, but the chairs are as you would have guessed, plastic – hence the name.
