Arctic wrap-up: "Her hair caught on fire!”
May 19, 2005 13: 46 EST
Yesterday, the Greenland Ice Queens commented that they looked “like matches,” referring to their pale bodies and burned faces. Today, Danna took the metaphor a little too far when she accidentally lit her hair on fire. Meanwhile, Lonnie and Eric are pushing forward and trying to stay positive despite poor traveling conditions on the Arctic Ocean. Their latest obstacle: 16 inches of fluffy snow. On the bright side, today was the first day they didn’t have to cross a lead.
Greenland Ice Queens
A trimming of hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows
“Oh my, what a hullabaloo here on the ice. The morning began with Danna in her eager to boil water burned a hole in our footprint. Not only that, but the queen also had to sit and watch the burner, which resulted in that her hair caught on fire!! Luckily there was not much damage. Madam D got a trimming of hair, eyelashes and eyebrows. She also managed to get sunburned on her tongue. How that happened only God knows.”
Of course the Americans have an airbase here
“Today we were going to travel the last part to DYE2. On the way we spotted two skiing sails. To our surprise it was our Norwegian friend Sjur & Co, who came ‘sailing’ along the ice. We also spotted an American air base, you wouldn’t believe it, but over our heads flew more than one Hercules airplanes that then landed on the ice. Of course the Americans have an airbase here!”
Beer sodas and other junk
“We arrived at DYE2, it is a huge monster of a thing – what it used to be, we don’t know, but it looks like a radar station. It has been abandoned a long time ago and is standing here almost 200 km (124 miles) inland. We crawled in to it and found it empty, except for beer, sodas, plates and other junk. Old cranes lay on the bottom of this shed on the ice. It was really weird.”
One World expedition – Summer Arctic crossing
We couldn’t see more than 100 meters
“Inhospitable - that's the best word we've found to describe the Arctic - at least for us. Polar bears may feel otherwise, but we've already had too many encounters with those. Today was our best travel day to date. We covered almost 7 miles, much of it in blowing snow. Most times, when we climbed a pressure ridge to scope the route, we couldn't see more than 100 meters.”
Vancouver to Moscow
The team is doing well as they approach the one year mark of their expedition. As the weather warms, bike travel becomes more pleasant; and the hospitality of the Siberian communities continues to lift the team’s spirits.
Infection-bearing parasites
“The team continues to move forward as the Siberian climate seemingly transforms directly from winter to summer. A new danger has replaced the perils brought on by ice, snow and cold: ticks. Although ticks are usually relatively benign, in Siberia many of these parasites act as a vector delivering a type of fatal encephalitis. It is said that one in ten of these creatures are infected. Although none of the team has been bitten yet, there have been several close calls.”
