Arctic wrap-up: Polar hygiene, and Napoleon on ice

The One World guys continue to struggle against the ice drift. It’s disheartening to push hard all day, make good progress, then see that you’ve only managed 2 miles according to the GPS. Today, they also provide a glimpse into what it’s like to stay clean in the Arctic. On Greenland, the Ice Queens cold winds and injuries, but they maintain their positive attitude and sense of humor.
One world expedition – Summer Arctic crossing
Losing mileage while we sleep
“The first thing we noticed today when getting out of the tent was the obvious change in snow consistency. It was wet and packable, which means warmer temperatures, and we were definitely surprised to find a 36 degree reading on our electronic Brunton weather station. The other thing we noticed about today was that we are still drifting southwest. We are losing mileage while we sleep.”
A lesson in Arctic hygiene
“Lonnie: I decided I needed a shower and a hair wash, and since we've been saving on fuel lately, I melted some snow to rinse off with. The chilly part of the whole ordeal was the prerinse I gave myself with several fistfuls of snow. Invigorating to say the least.”
”Eric: Amazingly enough, I feel really clean. The dirtiest thing in the Arctic is us. So, instead of a snow bath, I brushed my teeth. I did, however, decide to make one radical clean up and change my underwear, which felt good, since I've been wearing the same pair since I left Grand Marais on May 2.”

Napoleon on ice
“It has been a hard day today, especially for Danna. She woke up this morning with a severe pain in her arm. It was so bad that she could not walk with a ski pole all day. This of course meant that Mutti had to be in the lead and do the pulling. The wind blew from southeast and it was a cold wind. There we walked along for 7 hours straight, the one-armed lady (it wasn’t Napoleon, even though the resemblance - with one arm on the stomach - was striking) and little Mutti.”
A rather personal injury
“Now Danna is not the only one who has an aliment. Mutti has the worst chafe between her cheeks and a couple of worn down feet. Luckily it is progressing; especially the cheeks, but then again they are well taken care of. To Danna’s great amusement. It is a lovely sight; Mutti is laying with her butt in the air, rubbing Vaseline on it.”
