Both Poles table: From North to South by any means
Jun 16, 2004 14: 38 EST
In 1982, a mere 22 years ago, using snowmobiles Ranulph Fiennes and Charles Burton reached the North Pole thus becoming the first polar explorers to reach both the North Pole and South Pole. Since then only 42 other people have been able reach both poles.
According to the BBC Ranulph was “kicked out of the SAS for deliberately blowing up a Twentieth Century Fox film-set in Castle Coombe, Wiltshire," starting out a long career of adventuring. In 2000 Ranulph had a near tragic accident in the Arctic and last summer he suffered a heart attack, yet this April he was out there again, running in the Redmoon North Pole Marathon where he finished second. In 2002 Ranulph’s partner to both poles, Charles Burton, passed away; his legacy shadowed by Sir Ranulph’s.
The fourth person to reach both poles is Will Steger. He just recently completed a 5 month journey through the Northwest Territories, Canada. Number 10 and 11 are the Mordre brothers, creators of the self-named boots. 12 is Erling Kagge, the first unsupported to the South Pole; the list keeps on going.
15 of the total 44 have also climbed Everest, thus completing the ‘Three Poles.’
Like the other polar tables this one emphasizes female adventurers. Here, however, 16% of the people are women, compared to the 10 and 13% of the other tables.
