Chile's Glacial research: "Choose a ship of small draught"
image story

“If you plan to make a voyage of discovery, choose a ship of small draught”
(Captain James Cook rejecting the large ships offered by the Admiralty for the search of a new continent.)

These are the first lines on their website, to describe the Background and Purpose of CECS, Centro de Estudios Científicos (Center for Scientific Studies) in Chile.

A great crew

A reader alerted us to this place; "a great crew of scientific research". So we went and checked. Founded in Santiago with a grant from the Tinker Foundation in 1984, CECS is a private, non-profit corporation, dedicated to the development, promotion and diffusion of scientific research. Three research Laboratories currently operate at CECS: Biophysics and Molecular Physiology, Glaciology and Climate Change, and Theoretical Physics.

These are the guys who check the state of the ice-caps and glaciers that you are skiing, swimming, climbing - or trying to sail by!

A lab with a view

In 2000, the team moved the libraries and labs to a historic ex-hotel in Southern Chile (hotel Schuster), facing a river and close to a large University. They actively seek the incorporation of young scientists as members and promotes development of new research areas close-knit working environment. Indeed "a ship of small draught!”

If the ice melted faster than you could ski it, and you are near Valdivia, these are the guys to place your complaint with!

CECS was founded in 1984, in Santiago, Chile, as the Center for Scientific Studies of Santiago, by Chilean Physicist, Claudio Teitelboim (Director), Biophysicist Ramón Latorre and Geophysicist Armando Cisternas, with a grant from the Tinker Foundation. in 2000, CECS moved to Valdivia in southern Chile, as a new Millennium Science Institute, the first independent research institute for Natural Sciences in Chile.

Eight senior scientists today form the nucleus of the Millennium Institute: Ramón Latorre, Pedro Labarca, Marcelo Rubinstein, Francisco Sepúlveda (Biophysics and Molecular Physiology); Gino Casassa (Glaciology and Climate Change); Claudio Teitelboim, Jorge Zanelli (Theoretical Physics). All are internationally recognized in their specific fields.

Some twenty researchers, students and technicians work in the laboratories.
