Contact GEO hits Greenland
May 25, 2005 12: 17 EST
For the first time ever, you can now track expeditions in Greenland! Two expeditions – The Greenland Ice Queens, and the Green Speed adventure family – are pioneering the new Contact 3.0 GEO technology. Ironically, the two teams might just cross paths at 2800 meters, near the center of the Greenland Ice cap. Check out the images of the live maps to see the two teams’ positions.

Arctic obstacles
So far, the Ice Queens (Danna and Anne-Mette) have been battled through whiteouts, snow storms, broken equipment, and communication malfunctions due to solar storms, not to mention lighting themselves on fire. All they need now is a polar bear to raid their supplies. But they remained strong, and as you can see by the picture, at least the weather has improved for them.

Half a bottle of whisky to pass the time
“We have moved an astonishing distance of 0 km in the last 36 hours. The winds have not blown more than 5 km/h, so we have done what we do best; sleep and eat, taking turns checking for wind. But spirits are still up and we are all hoping for wind. If not we have a half of a Nalgene bottle of whisky left to help us pass time.”
Contact GEO is very simple to use on an expedition. Your altitude and position is retrieved by a GPS. Just add it in the CONTACT 3.0 position field, and push 'send'. Your position is now instantly uploaded to the web and automatically plotted on a map to be viewed by anyone visiting the expedition website.
While the input is easy, the automated plot is the crux. Expedition positions have been plotted on maps before, but they're usually done manually by webmasters during late-night shifts. Instead, GEO is done by the explorer from a 160 gr. (6 oz) iPAQ PDA, straight to the web.
All images are made possible by Contact 3.0
