Livingston Island, I presume?
11:06 a.m. EST Dec 29, 2003
Mission accomplished for the Omega Livingston Island crew. Earlier this month Damien and his team successfully measured the heights of Mt Bowles along with their main objective, Mount Friesland. They managed to fly off of Livingston Island without a hitch, and all are probably back home by now.
Damien sent ExplorersWeb the team’s final dispatch:
Hey Guys,
Here is our final dispatch: The Omega Livingston GPS team flew off Livingston in three spectacular helo flights in the morning of Dec 22nd. We then spent the night at King George Island in the DAP hut and flew back to Punta the next afternoon on the DAP Dash-7, arriving back home at 11pm to unpack, eat and sleep.
We would like to thank everybody for all their messages of support during the expedition and to all those who helped the trip come together and be a success, particular The Omega Foundation and the staff and crew at DAP.
Looking forward to a New Year, a new map of Livingston Island and new Antarctic plans.
Damien
On the expedition this year is Damien Gildea, 34, of Australia, Chilean Rodrigo Fica, 36, an Australian GIS specialist John Bath, 33, and a Chilean student, Osvaldo Usaj. The aim this year is to first ascend Mount Friesland on Livingston Island and record it’s proper height by means of a GPS.
The information collected by the Omega expedition will be combined with previous maps and research to make a more accurate map of the area that will be available sometime in 2004.
