Northern Irish to the North Pole
12:32 p.m. EST Dec 2, 2003
It’s about two years away, but the Northern Irish aren’t waiting to get prepared for their unsupported ski to the North Pole in 2005. Five in all will be on the expedition, including Everest climbers, and even a jockey.

Both sides of Everest will be represented in this expedition. Richard Dougan and Martin Duggan from last spring’s Northern Irish expedition will be on the team. Richard led the expedition that had two summiters on the North Side, Banjo Bannon and Jamie McGuinness.

Hannah Shields, from last spring’s Pat Falvey’s South Side Everest expedition will also be on the expedition. She almost reached the Balcony on Everest before the winds became too strong to continue for her.

Also on the North Pole team will be Peter Dew, an outdoor instructor and Richard Dunwoody, a very successful jockey and a ‘legend in National Hunt racing.” Dunwoody previously competed in the Magnetic North Pole race in 2002.
