Polar Husky's home after 5 months in Arctic
image story

Jun 15, 2004 12: 01 EST
The Polar Husky expedition has finished their nearly 156 day, 3000 mile journey from the Northwest Territories, Canada to the Arctic Ocean and beyond, documenting climate change. They travelled by dog-sled and compiled their data for NASA. On the team is Will Steger who made the longest traverse of the Antarctic 1989 as part of a 6 man expedition.

Check out the Polar Husky website for a Flash Macromedia presentation of the journey, with route, dispatches, and educational resources.

The team arrived back in the States today; though they had originally planned to reach Pangnirtung on Baffin Island, they decided to leave from Pond Inlet near the Barnes Ice Cap, in Nunavut, Canada.

Will Steger - 2004 Arctic Transect Expedition Leader. Steger has led some significant feats in dogsled exploration such as a dogsled journey to the North Pole without re-supply (1986), the 1,600-mile south-north traverse of Greenland (1988), the historic 3,471-mile International Trans-Antarctica Expedition - the longest dogsled traverse of the Arctic Ocean from Russia to Ellesmere Island in Canada (1995). Feats for which Steger has received honors and recognitions among others include: Explorers Club Finne Ronne Memorial Award (1997), National Geographic Society's First Explorer-In-Residence (1996) and National Geographic Society's John Oliver La Gorce Medal for "accomplishments in geographic exploration, in the sciences, and for public service to advance international understanding" (1995).
