Polar aviators on their way out of Antarctica
11:14 a.m. EST Dec 19, 2003
1 down, 1 to go. Having completed their flight to the South Pole, Jennifer and Colin are now back in Patriot Hills. They arrived last night at eleven in the evening and, “were able to join the camp for an exceedingly welcome steak and salad at 11pm before setting up tents for the night.”
Having only 1.5 hours of sleep in the last two days, the polar pilots are happy to be getting some rest.
Polly is at the Rothera station on the Antarctic Peninsula. The crew would like to give a big thanks to all who are sending their messages of support to Polly after her plans were unfortunately altered due to some logistical issues in Patriot Hills.
They recently received a message from Ian Dickens who was a crewmember on an around the world yacht race. “Sometimes the path is easy and other times, it is impassable. When that is the case, it is daft to bang heads against walls - which is what far too many people do, for far too many years, in far too many corporations. Much better to reassess and approach things from a different angle.
Doing so delivers a whole new path of discoveries and as a result, the revised journey becomes richer and even more rewarding.”
And that’s just what Polly is doing. She’s rerouted her trip and instead of getting to New Zealand by flying over Antarctica, she’s now heading North up the Americas and will get to NZ by means of the Pacific Ocean.
Jennifer Murray and Colin Bodhill plan to fly a helicopter from New York, down the East Coast of the Americas to the South Pole and then up the West Coast of the Americas, to the North Pole and back to New York – with some stops in between of course. The duo landed on the South Pole, December 17th, the 100th anniversary of Wilbur and Orville’s first manned, powered, flight.
Polly Voucher is flying a single-engine plane, solo, around the world. She planed to fly over both Poles, and successfully did so over the North. However, logistical problems have halted her from flying over the South. She’s going to reroute her flight to New Zealand via California. Polly started her flight back in May of this year.
