Raging arctic storms force Mike Horn ashore
17:03 p.m. EDT Aug 1, 2003
Mike Horn is up against some severe storms in the Arctic as the Arktos adventure continues. After struggling with his kayak in heavy seas, Mike went ashore in Barrow in North Alaska on July 23. Ever since then the waves have been huge, making it impossible to move on by sea.

The arrival in Barrow did bring a pleasant surprise for Mike, as an old friend of his Eric Brossier, arrived there at the same time. Eric is currently on a polar expedition sailing the Northwest Territories and circumnavigated the polar icecap last year.

Mike is anxious to get going, he has to cross the Bering Strait before the water starts to freeze again. With the weather reports still showing high winds, Mike decided to leave his kayak and continue on foot towards the Bering straight. The kayak will be brought further down the coast by his supply team giving Mike the choice to use it if the weather subsides.

Mike Horn departed August 2002 from North Cape on his Arktos journey. His goal is to circumnavigate the Polar Circle. During the trip his logistic team is meeting up with him to re-supply with medication, equipment, food and various means of transportation. The trip is expected to last 18 months.
