Rosie expected at the Pole in just hours!
13:07 p.m. EST Jan 13, 2004
In just a few short hours, Rosie Stancer is expected at the South Pole. Her aim is to make it under the 45-day mark. It’s really going to be a party at the Pole, right! South Pole skiers Fiona Thornewill and Park Young-seok’s crew are already there! However, Park has made some remarks in the Korean Time saying that Fiona had, “moved inland about 30 kilometers by plane." So, he is not recognizing her 42-day record and is saying that his 44-day expedition with his 4 teammates is the record.
So, things might not be all that ‘Rosie’ at the South Pole! ExplorersWeb and AdventureStats are currently looking into Park’s comments right now and will publish our findings. All these skiers were on unsupported South Pole expeditions starting from Hercules Inlet. Follow the links to the left to read more about Park and the Korean Times article.
Rosie and Fiona are both going solo and unsupported to the South Pole. Fiona's satellite phone has since stopped working, but we're able to receive information from her ARGOS beacon. This weekend Fiona reached the Pole, and did it in a record setting 42 days.
Korean adventurer Park Young-seok was the 8th person in the world to ascend all 14, 8000m mountains in 2001 when he reached the summit of K2. He has since gone on to attempt both the South Pole and North Pole. After initially failing at both, he just now reached the South Pole, unsupported. Next on his list is the NP!
