Hello Yasser, yeah, how you doin’?
11:17 a.m. EST Jan 5, 2004
This report will start out with a small excerpt from the team’s journal, “Psychological challenges will play a major role. How will Israeli Special Forces veteran Avihu Shoshani be able to overcome his distaste for the actions of Suleiman al-Khatib, a Fatah Organization activist (Palestinian)?
As al-Khatib made a farewell phone call to Yasser Arafat, Shoshani stood on the side shaking his head. “Just like that old guy, Suleiman was also in jail for attacking Israelis. Now he says he’s abandoned violence in favor of diplomacy. So why’s he making a folk hero out of a guy who murdered Jews?”
So far so good it seems – at least relationship-wise. The joint Israeli/Palestinian crew, who are currently en route via sailboat to Antarctica through the Drake Passage are nearing land. At which point the ‘Extreme Peace Mission’ will venture inland to climb a peak.
The journey so far hasn’t been all that easy and the crew at least has one thing in common – seasickness. Half the crew was *feeding the fish at some point during the journey – the Drake Passage isn’t the best place to grow your sea legs.
The Breaking the Ice group is part of the ‘Extreme Peace Missions’ organization. The idea behind the ‘Extreme Peace Missions’ group is that, “memorable extreme experiences can bring people together for life.” For this organization’s maiden project they chose the Israelis and the Palestinians.
4 of each are heading down to Antarctica via sailboat where they’ll attempt to make a first ascent of an Antarctic peak.
