Early this week we released the Everest expedition list and now the game plan for the 2005 North Pole season is up. Lots of action is expected on the Arctic Ocean this year, just check it out!
Two crossings
There are two crossing attempts, one supported and one unsupported. American Lonnie Dupre and Eric Larsen will travel from Cape Arkticheskiy, Siberia, to the geographic North Pole, then on to Ellesmere Island, Canada. Lonnie got the Rolex award last year.
Veteran polar ladies Norwegian Liv Arnesen and American Ann Bancroft will also make an attempt to cross the Arctic Ocean, the first female crossing if successful.
"Arctic" North Pole
Fire fighter Jim McNeill will try to be the first person to reach the "Arctic" North Pole, or "The Pole of relative inaccessibility", the point in the Arctic Ocean furthest away from any land.
Then there is another attempt for a solo first female to the North Pole: British Ann Daniels is picking up French/Finnish Dominick's torch (Dominick Arduin perished last year on her attempt).
Peary and Nansen
There's a polar back-to-back attempt, a North Pole speed record attempt, a speed record attempt to solve Peary controversy, one expedition in the footsteps of Fridjtof Nansen, a Bering strait crossing, two polar races and a polar marathon.
Phew, with all this hot, hot action the North Pole will surely melt this year. Check out the list in the links section and also ExWeb's story from last year - what's left?
